Moritz Hardt — Morgenstern’s Prophecy and the Future of Prediction #

Thursday, November 5, 17:00–18:00, Große Aula

Moritz Hardt is a director at the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems and an honorary professor at the University of Tübingen. A century ago, economist Oskar Morgenstern conjectured that predicting the social world would be largely impossible, because predictions change the very reality they seek to anticipate — what we now call performativity. This talk revisits that prophecy through recent advances in performative prediction, and introduces a stable signals principle that holds even under arbitrarily large performative effects. Read the full abstract and biography.

Mohsen Bayati — From Automating Expertise to Scaling Oversight #

Friday, November 6, 16:30–17:30, Große Aula

Mohsen Bayati is the Carl and Marilynn Thoma Professor of Operations, Information and Technology at the Stanford Graduate School of Business. As AI agents take on tasks that used to require substantial human expertise, a new challenge emerges: determining when human oversight remains necessary. Starting from a clinical prediction problem, the talk asks when autonomous agents should act independently and when they should seek human intervention, and how effective oversight can be maintained as AI capabilities advance. Read the full abstract and biography.
